Chris Pine and Jake Gyllenhaal Joining “Into the Woods”…

If you’re a musical nerd like myself, you would probably be freaking out but also asking yourself, “Why, Disney, why?”  Into the Woods is a musical focusing on the question that most kids ask their parents after they finish reading them a fairytale:  “What happens next?”  Into the Woods answers this question with a rather dark, twisted musical that mashes up possible endings to many fairytales.  The story focuses on a baker and his wife’s journey to confront a witch who cursed them with being unable to have children years earlier.

Looking at all of the adaptations and reboots we’ve seen on classic fairytales lately, it’s easy to see why Disney is drawn to making an Into the Woods adaptation.  Yes, we’ve had a summer filled with interesting takes on Snow White; however, there was the one summer that gave us Tangled, a new perspective on Rapunzel (and one of my favorite movies… I’m a girl.  Of course, I love Disney princess movies).  Disney is also in the process of filming Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty from different perspectives, as well.  And let’s not forget the untold story of Maleficent arriving next summer, starring Angelina Jolie.  What Disney is doing is really smart, and based on my friends who have either seen or performed in Into the Woods, audiences fall in love with this musical.

Now, let’s talk man-candy.  Chris Pine and Jake Gyllenhaal are both incredibly talented and sexy actors that I would love to see on that silver screen.  Make them sing, and every woman in America will be standing at every box office shaking their wallets and screaming “TAKE MY MONEY!”  Dramatic, yes, but I’ve seen it happen.  It’s quite hilarious, actually.  The reason why I’m a little hesitant to do the following is this:  neither one has had a singing role or really proved they have musical theatre chops.  Both are in negotiations to play siblings of Cinderella and Rapunzel, and if they are cast, Pine and Gyllenhaal will be performing alongside Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp.  Into the Woods is expected to begin production this fall.

If we have any hard-core musical fans here, share your thoughts below!  What do you think of the cast so far?  Do you think Pine or Gyllenhaal will have what it takes?  What do you think about the different takes on classic Disney movies/fairytales?
