Angelina Jolie’s “Sexy” Take on Classic Disney VillainA

This year’s Disney live action panel at the D23 expo did not disappoint, especially when it came to guest appearances.  The biggest one?  Angelina Jolie’s surprise appearance bringing the audience to their feet.  Jolie discussed her latest role at the panel:  her highly anticipated “deliciously cruel” take on classic Disney villain, Maleficent.

Maleficent tells the story of the troubled sorceress before, during, and after the events of Sleeping Beauty, all told from Maleficent’s perspective.  Jolie eagerly shared her love for this character with the audience, admitting that she has loved her and was mysteriously drawn to her ever since she was a child.  She even admitted that she wanted to put a “sexy” new spin on this classic villain and also loved playing her so much that she misses the horns she wore for the film.

The audience saw an exclusive scene from Maleficent, also starring Elle Fanning  and Vivienne Jolie-Pitt (Jolie’s daughter) as Princess Aurora (younger and older versions).  The famous christening scene of Princess Aurora was recreated by showing off both Fanning and Jolie-Pitt while Jolie cast her spell on the child.

Robert Stromberg directed this prequel/retelling of the classic Disney tale, also worked as the production designer for Alice in Wonderland and Oz the Great and Powerful.  Clearly, this isn’t his first time at the rodeo when it comes to recreating well-known stories.  Stromberg creates beautiful visuals influenced by his two previous films, but he doesn’t go as over the top as Tim Burton.  He pulls inspiration from Alice and Oz while channeling the 1959 animated film, as well.

The seductive twist on Maleficent will hit theaters July 2, 2014.
